Hope for the pols?

- UPDATED

Democratic Representative James Moran actually took responsibility for making bigoted statements. Cheers to him for standing up and doing what is right. Compare this with Jesse "Hymietown" Jackson, Al Sharpton, Robert Byrd, and others.

Remember: when Trent Lott made his idiotic statements at Strom Thurmond's birthday party, the Republicans took action to punish the offender. Trent Lott is no longer majority leader. When Jerry Falwell made his idiotic comments about 9/11, conservative critics were the first ones to stand up and say so. (Even the dreaded Limbaugh.)

You may claim that this was simply political expediency, well, to some extent, sure. But it was also the rank and file's disapproval of the statements made. Thus helping support the idea that Republicans are not, in fact, racist. Should I bother pointing out here that the Democrats did not so much slap Byrd or Jackson or Sharpton on the wrist for their statements?

I wonder if Moran did this on his own or was he pressured by the Democratic leadership to resign? I can only hope that he was pressured. Given their track record, however, I won't hold my breath to find out if that is how it played out.

Moran Quits Party Leadership Post (washingtonpost.com) Embattled U.S. Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D) quit his House leadership post today for making what he called "insensitive" remarks about Jews pushing the nation into war with Iraq.

UPDATE: Hope springs eternal . . . . I am truly glad to see the Dems doing the right thing and policing their own members. I hope this is the start of a trend. We'll keep watch just to find out.
